BACKGROUND
Mr. Stern was admitted to the California bar, entitling him to practice in all
California courts, and was also admitted to practice before the United States
District Court for the Central District of California, which includes Orange,
Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, in January 1969. Later that year,
while on active military service, he was admitted to the bar of the
United States Court of Military Appeals. Mr. Stern subsequently was admitted
to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit,
which hears appeals from federal district courts in not only California but
a number of other West Coast states. In 1986, Mr. Stern became a member of
the District of Columbia Bar. Since 1972, Mr. Stern has maintained his principal
office in Orange County. His law practice, which is currently located in Irvine,
is principally devoted to civil litigation, with substantial emphasis on
employment litigation, including wrongful termination, sexual harassment
and discrimination. As he is admitted to practice in all of the courts
having jurisdiction over such matters, Mr. Stern is involved in matters
on file in both California and Federal Courts, as well as matters which
have been submitted to "alternative dispute resolution", such as
mediation and arbitration.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
After graduating from Scottsdale High School in Arizona,
Mr. Stern attended Stanford University, graduating with great
distinction with a bachelor's degree in political science.
After 4 years in the Bay Area, and believing that it might be fun to attend law school in a place which had "real seasons", Mr. Stern applied to and was admitted to Harvard Law School. Mr. Stern earned a J. D. degree, again with great distinction, but after spending three winters digging his car out of snowdrifts, he decided that the West Coast was the best coast and returned to California.
BAR ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIPS
Mr. Stern has been a member of the State Bar of California since his admission in 1969. Although not actively practicing there, he continues to be a member of the District of Columbia Bar. He is a member of the Orange County Bar Association ("OCBA"). In 1984, at a time when he was the senior litigation partner of a law firm that emphasized representation of hospitals and other health care providers, Mr. Stern served as the chairman of the OCBA's Health Care Law Section. He is currently a member of both the Labor & Employment Law Section and the Business Litigation Section of the OCBA. Mr. Stern is also a member of the California Employment Lawyers Association (“CELA”), a statewide organization of attorneys who represent employees in wrongful termination, discrimination and other employment cases.
